Conversion rate formulas

The basic formula is:

Conversion rate (%) = (number of conversions / number of eligible opportunities) × 100

Use one primary denominator for a decision and keep alternative views as diagnostics. Changing the denominator after seeing results can create a misleading success story.

CRO is about value, not just conversion count

A higher conversion rate can be harmful if it comes from low-quality leads, heavy discounting, fraud, lower order value, or users who churn quickly. Mature CRO programs balance immediate conversion with downstream value.

The variant increases conversion rate by 16.7% relative, but revenue per visitor falls by 9.8%. If revenue is the business objective, the apparent CRO win is a loss. This is why AOV, refunds, margin, lead quality, retention, and RPV may be guardrails or primary outcomes.

The six-step CRO process

1. Define the conversion goal

4. Form a mechanism-based hypothesis

Use evidence, not generic “best practices.” A useful structure is:

5. Prioritize opportunities

Prioritization prevents a backlog of random button ideas. ICE is a simple model:

6. Test, analyze, and iterate

Segmenting can reveal that mobile users, new visitors, or a particular acquisition channel experience a different effect. But searching dozens of segments after the fact creates multiple-comparison risk and can produce appealing but fragile stories.

Predefine important segments when the hypothesis requires them. Treat unexpected subgroup findings as exploratory, document them, and confirm them in a follow-up experiment using fresh data. Do not deploy a change to only the “winning” segment unless the interaction is credible and the experience remains coherent.
